Choosing a Focal Point in Your Home Decor

[ad_1]

Successful room designs always include a focal point to add visual interest and focus the eye’s attention on one area. Your focal point should draw attention as soon as someone walks in your room and the other design elements should be coordinated to compliment it. The focal point does not have to be in the center of the room to be effective. You can use many different objects from various areas in your space to create a unique focus. Don’t assume that you must design your entire room around a traditional piece of art. You can use a piece of pottery, an architectural element, or even an area rug as an excellent focal point in a room.

Furniture provides a simple way to create a focal point. If you have a beautiful piece that you want people to notice, make it your focal point. If you inherited your grandmother’s buffet table that has been in the family for generations before her, design your room around it. A large dramatic piece of furniture doesn’t have to be placed in the center of your room, but it should be placed where the eye can easily find it. For example, you could draw attention to the gorgeous buffet table by placing it on a wall painted in a bold, contrasting color. The color will immediately draw your eyes to that area and then you will notice the table right away.

If you don’t have a particular piece of furniture to use as a focal point, consider using an architectural element. A fireplace is always a great focal point for any room. You can draw attention to a beautiful fireplace by decorating a mantel with bold accents of color. If you don’t have a fireplace, you can create a focal point with a plain wall. Choose a wall that is immediately noticeable when someone enters your room. Then display an artfully arranged collected of photographs in various frames. You could hang mirrors of various sizes on the wall to draw immediate attention and create an interesting visual effect. Some people make a focal point by covering one wall in a bold shade of red or bright, graphic wallpaper.

A really impressive piece of art can also be an excellent focal point. Successful art engages the viewer’s emotions, so if you have a beautiful portrait, you can easily create the perfect focal point for your room. To get the maximum impact from a piece of art, place it where it can be easily viewed from the seating area. This makes it easy to study and it becomes a great conversation starter when entertaining guests.

A particularly beautiful rug can also become a great focal point in your room. Rugs occupy open spaces and add another element of interest to any part of a room. If you select a large rug in a bold color, you can use it as the focus of your entire design. Choose neutral colors for furniture and walls to prevent distracting from your rug. You can add punches of color throughout the room to accent the rug’s design scheme. If you choose a bold red rug in a room with sleek black furniture, the rug will be the immediate focal point when people enter the space. You can draw more attention to the rug by playing up its color through decorative pillows or candles placed randomly throughout the room.

Regardless of what you choose as a focal point, make sure you use a piece that is unique to your personal style. The best focal points are based on the home owner’s personality so don’t be afraid to take some creative liberties. If you love to ice skate, an antique pair of skates hung over a fireplace could make a perfect solution to your focal point dilemma. Choose something you love and your entire room will soon be celebration of who you are.
