Decorative bird cages can grace a party table or add that unusual finishing touch to your interior. When someone thinks of decorative bird cages, they almost always think of antique bird cages. And, at the same time, they think of substantial price tags. This isn’t always true.
Yes, a decorative bird cage might just be an antique. But then again, it could be an antique reproduction or simply an attractive cage. If you are looking for something decorative, you’ve got to make several decisions.
First, what are you going to use this bird cage for? Will it actually house a bird or two, fill an empty space in a room or become a center piece for a party table? What size do you need? Are you looking for something Victorian in feel or would a bamboo or wooden cage with an obvious oriental influence suit your purposes?
If the bird cage is also intended to house a bird, you will have to be concerned about the finish of the bars (some older finishes could be toxic to your bird) and the spacing of the bars. Bars have to be consistently close enough together to keep the bird inside the cage. In addition, the cage has to be sturdy enough to allow you to change food and water and clean the cage without worrying.
If, however, a decorative cage is to be just that, a decoration, you are bound only by size and price. You don’t have to worry about finishes or stability.
The best places to look for a cage that is to be used only for decoration would be start checking second hand and antique shops in your area. You might try a regional antique show, they attract a lot of dealers. If you can find an antique dealer specializing in the period you are interested in, Victorian furniture, for example, they may know of someone who would come across an occasional piece.
Another source would be an interior designer or up scale furniture store. Quite often they may have knowledge of a manufacturer producing new cages that might meet your needs. If you can’t find one from those sources, the next step would the Internet. Searching eBay and other on line auctions, along with on line antique dealers would also improve your chances of finding that perfect cage.
When you do decide to purchase, make sure the cage will fit the space and the use you have in mind. Remember, though, sometimes the search is almost more exciting than the find.
