On your garage door there are two springs. The heavy long springs that are attached to the upper part of the door are called the extension springs or side-mounted springs. The springs that are attached to a metal plate that is fixed and placed above the center of the frame and parallel to the surface of the frame are called the torsion springs. The torsion springs work on the basic principle of tension and has cables that are attached to each side of the door on the lower panel. When it is time for a garage door spring replacement you can replace them on your own if you know the procedure or have a professional do the job.
It is important to note that doing a spring replacement can be dangerous if it not done with the right precautions because of the tension that is in the spring. You must use extreme precaution because you could lose your fingers, eyes, hand, limbs, or even your life. This is why most will leave this garage door repair to a professional.
• Before you do the replacement release the tension in the old spring
• Do not touch the cable drum
• Make sure that you never wind off or wind up the spring using a screwdriver
• You should first always insert a bar that is well-fitting into the winding core before you touch a setscrew. Do not use a socket or box wrench for the setscrew.
• Keep the bar in the cone while doing spring replacement.
• When the spring is wound never touch the bracket.
The procedure to replace the garage door spring replacement is:

• Make sure that you mark each end of the shaft to help level the door after the new spring installation.
• Wind off the unbroken spring and then undo and remove the bolts that are securing the cones to the bracket.
• Replace and reinstall all of the hardware.
• Make sure that you wind up the replaced spring.
• Check the garage door for level and balance.
• Apply some lubricant to help minimize the friction.
