With the growing need to reduce our carbon footprint to transfer to a carbon efficient economy many changes need to take place in the transport industry. To meet this growing demand many companies are putting a lot of time and energy into developing environmentally efficient transport. With technological advances taking place in batteries the dream of effective and efficient clean transport is becoming a reality.
Environmentally friendly areas of transport are developing quickly such as electrically powered bikes and scooters Another form of transport that is very new to the electrically powered family is the advent of the Electric Skateboard. They are powered by an electric motor and either a lead acid or LiFEPo4 (lithium Iron Phosphate Battery).
Most Electric Skateboards are powered by a wireless digital controller that communicates to the board through a digitally coded signal. The rider has complete control of the skateboard by either pulling on the trigger to increase speed our pushing on the trigger to break. The feeling you get is similar to snowboarding or surfing and you can travel large distance on one charge. With a LiFePo4 battery you can get up to 1.5 hours of travel time.
Not for the faint hearted, electric skateboards can take some getting used to. The rapid acceleration and speed can take some getting used to for those that haven’t ridden a skateboard before. However, with some concentrated practice (perhaps on a quiet footpath) it doesn’t take long before you have good control and confidence. Depending on your local law, you may need to wear a helmet when riding. There may also be restrictions on being able to ride electric vehicles of certain capacities on footpaths etc.. so check your local transport authority before considering using one for serious transport.
Many of the lighter boards with Lithium batteries and smaller engines such as the 500W varieties are easily portable and are great to use for short distance transport between other larger journeys such as going from the bus to the train. Not only are they great fun to ride, but they make eco-friendly travel easy and fun. There are many electric skateboard companies popping up at the moment particularly in the US, Australia and the UK.
A Google search for ‘electric skateboards’ will no doubt reveal some of the market leaders. Before purchasing, weigh up the pros and cons of each company and make an informed decision.
