Tuttnauer Autoclave Preventative Maintenance: Do It Yourself Tips

[ad_1]

A Tuttnauer autoclave is a quality piece of equipment but, like any other machine, regular upkeep and maintenance will keep it operating at peak performance levels and save you a lot of money in repair bills. As the saying goes, An ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure! Here are some preventative maintenance tips you can use to keep your autoclave out of the shop and in your office where it belongs.

The following tasks should be performed on a weekly basis:

Clean Air Trap Jet: You’ll find the air trap jet in the water reservoir and it’s best to clean this while your autoclave is cycling. Simply locate the trap and move the clean out wire in and out 10 times to keep the valve clear.

Clean Water Sensor: If you have an electronic model you’ll need to clean the water sensor, located at the rear of the chamber. Use a clean damp sponge or cloth and gently wipe any dirt or residue off the sides of the sensor.

Clean Chamber: Use Chamber Brite to clean the chamber. This works best in a cold chamber but if it’s hot fill it with water first. Follow the directions on the Chamber Brite package to avoid damaging the walls of the chamber.

Flush Fill Tube: If your Tuttnauer autoclave is an automatic model you’ll need to use the manual water fill button to flush the fill tube. If you have an ‘M’ or ‘MK’ model, turn the knob located at the back of the chamber to fill and flush the tube.

Clean Trays: Use a mild detergent or non-abrasive stainless steel cleaner to clean the trays and the tray glides inside the chamber. Use a clean soft cloth or sponge and do not use steel wool or bleach.

Clean Cabinet: Once a week, or as needed, clean the outside of the unit with a clean, soft cloth.

The following should be performed every two months:

Clean the Safety Valve:

It’s necessary to clean the safety valve every two months, under normal working conditions, to prevent it from becoming clogged or blocked. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Turn your autoclave on and start a normal cycle.
  • Allow it to build up to approximately 30 psi inside the chamber.
  • Turn your autoclave off.
  • Remove the cover from the water reservoir.
  • Using a screwdriver, pull the ring to open the safety valve for 2 seconds, then release. Caution: Hot Steam will escape when you do this so be careful to keep a safe distance between your face and the valve.
  • If you have a manual unit, turn the multivalve to the exhaust position and vent the pressure before you open the door. If you have an electronic unit, turn the power on and press the Stop button to abort the cycle.

Just these few, minor maintenance procedures will greatly extend the life of your Tuttnauer autoclave and help keep problems to a minimum. If you have the manpower, give one of your trusted employees the responsibility of making sure these tasks are performed on a regular basis and your autoclave will last for years to come.
