Christmas Tree Decorating Tips for A Unique and Festive Look
1. Try to lighten the load. Use short strands to avoid a wrestling match with lights. Use 50 light strands rather than 100 or more because they are easier to work with and easier to take off if you blow if a fuse. Place a power strip near the tree base, then flip the switch with your foot for easy on and off.
2. Work in sections. For easy-on, easy-off light stringing, try this: drop the plug-in end of the first strand to about 18 inches down the center of the tree( so it’s easy to attach the next strand), then begin weaving lights from the trunk to tips, working 12 to 18 inch sections. Think of it as creating blocks of light as you move around the tree, rather than wrapping strands around it. Work in and out, in and out, so the tree sparkles from within. When you reach a tip, separate the strand’s twisted wires, catching a tip between them. It holds the strand in place yet it pulls off easily.
3. Try the squint test. To make sure the tree is evenly lit, step back from it as you work and squint your eyes as you look at it. It becomes apparent where you have dark spots that you need to correct. And yes, the lights should be on when you’re stringing them.
4. Bring order to ornaments. When hanging ornaments, work from the simplest to the fanciest, place basic shiny balls in towards the trunk; they are are good filler and reflect light. Special ornaments should go toward the tips where they are most visible. For even distribution, pre-sort ornaments by color or style, then spread them on the floor so you can see what you have. A 6 foot tree needs about 125 ornaments for a full but not overdone look.
5. The great cover-up. Instead of a conventional tree skirt, use a throw. They come in so many colors and are so inexpensive, or you can use what you have. You can fluff up throws with the tissue paper you store ornaments in. It creates little clouds, then the tissue paper is right there to wrap the ornaments when you take the tree down.
