Owning an RV and taking it on a road trip is a great way to spend quality time with your family. You’ll get to spend time together and see all the interesting places in the country.
An RV is just like your home on wheels but minus some of the electrical equipment you use every day. However, if you want to bring these appliances with you on the road, you can do so. But you will need to prepare a power source for them in advance.
Tapping into the RV main power source for electricity will drain the batteries very fast. You wouldn’t want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere because your battery went dead.
There a many ways you can generate electricity on your RV. There are RV solar kits you can buy from the market. However, these kits can be quite expensive. A 330 watt RV solar kit will cost you about $2700!
As a cheaper alternative, you can generate electricity on your RV with a Do It Yourself (DIY) solar system. In actual fact, the system is quite simple. The main components are the solar panels, charge controller, battery bank and power inverter.
If you are able to read electrical diagram and solder wires together, you can set up the solar system on your vehicle without much problem. Generally, the function of the solar panel is to collect the energy from the sun and convert it into electricity.
The power from the panel will then be used by the charge controller to charge up the batteries. Since deep cycle batteries can only store Direct Current (DC), the power inverter will be used to convert the DC to Alternate Current (AC).
Since most of the appliances you’ve brought from home run on AC, you can now plug them into the power inverter. When the RV is stationary, all you’ll need to do is place the solar array outside and you’ll have free energy from the sun.
