The Pain of Living With a Home That’s Not Energy Efficient

[ad_1]

If your energy bill looks like something only somebody like Bill Gates could afford to pay, you’re probably one of the many people who know what it’s like to experience the pain of living with a home that’s not energy efficient.

And the main problem is that, unless you do something about it, that situation’s only likely to get worse as energy prices continue to escalate. So, let’s look at what you can do to ease the pain of living with a home that’s not energy efficient by looking at ways to make your home more energy efficient.

Lights Out

Let’s start with some very basic things you can do very easily to begin improving your home’s energy efficiency.

When darkness arrives, take a look around your house. Are there lights on everywhere, even in rooms that aren’t occupied? If so, that will be big contributing factor to your energy bill, so turn off all the lights in empty rooms and ask members of your family to do the same. After all, you should all be on the same page as far as keeping energy costs down, although that may be a hard sell if you have younger kids in your home.

Use appliances in the evening, when energy rates are generally cheaper; do your laundry then, making sure to wash full loads, where possible, and hang them out to dry the next day, thus avoiding using the clothes dryer, which is another big energy guzzler.

Maintain room temperatures by closing doors; avoid opening the fridge door too often and wash your dishes by hand.

Bring On The CFLs

And that’s not an acronym for the Canadian Football League! CFLs are compact fluorescent light bulbs, which are the new type of energy-efficient light bulb. While they are a little more expensive than incandescent lights, they pack quite a punch, and will last you 10 times longer than incandescents, while consuming just a quarter of the energy.

Switch Your Power Source

Since electricity is the most costly energy source, it’s best, from an energy cost and efficiency standpoint, to use appliances that run off cheaper forms of energy, such as fuel oil or natural gas.

For instance, if you have electric space heaters, using heaters that run off fuel oil will cost you at lot less in the long run.

Switching your energy source to solar, while costly at first, can cut your energy bills considerably and will pay for itself over time.

You’ve Got To Insulate To Cut Your Rates

Proper insulation will help with your heating and air conditioning costs by avoiding the loss of precious heat and cool air. Caulking doors and windows will add an additional layer of protection.

The more of the output from your heater and air conditioner that can be retained, the less the temperature in your home will fluctuate and the less work those systems will have to do.

If you decide not to follow this guide, you’ll continue to experience the pain of living with a home that’s not energy efficient. But, if you do decide to act on this advice, you’ll relieve the strain of those ridiculous energy bills every month while contributing to the process of improving the environment.
