Here are a few basic tips to save you money and get you started + a quick step by step
1. Assembling your centerpieces can be a fun and artistic experience, and one that gives you the opportunity to get a full understanding of how your centerpieces and bouquets are going to interact with other decor elements. I am going to make two recommendations right off the bat, If you are finding and purchasing the various materials for your centerpieces separately there are two places to start looking.
a. First, search for your various materials on the internet, particularly your centerpiece decor…this is something that might be difficult to find in your area depending on where you are from or if you are looking for special beads, crystals, faux butterflies or uncommon items.
b. Second, you can often find the basic elements of your centerpieces inexpensive and local such as glass vases, pots, fill sand, cement, faux flowers etc.
Save money! keep this in mind when shopping for your materials;
- If securing your branches permanently in the vase it is OK to use regular old Portland Cement. Plaster of Paris, while it sounds sophisticated is generally quite a bit more expensive (especially at an arts and crafts store) and works in much the same way
- save on crystals, purchase them in bulk, online and string them yourself.
- Save money on real flowers, place an order with the nearest floral wholesaler several months in advance. Prices go up around holidays and popular wedding and event peak periods.
- Keep in mind how you plan on attaching your decor to the centerpiece branches. Thin tess fishing line is always a good option, so are double sided tape, thin metal wire or small rubber or plastic bands the same color as your centerpiece. These are often sold as hair ties at discount stores.
- If painting your branches yourself use an inexpensive base coat or primer and then your premium paint only for the last coat. (this is especially helpful for any metallic color)
- Buy your branches and materials well ahead of time and do your homework. when ordering centerpiece branches. You want to do so as soon as possible before the event to give you plenty of time to order more if necessary. Sometimes it is tough to gauge how many branches or how much branch decor you will actually need until you assemble your first sample centerpiece.
Here is a quick assembly guide for your DIY wedding centerpieces;
1. Bundle the branches together in the desired arrangement, the centerpiece in the middle with the fillers surrounding and widening the centerpiece branch. Use pliable wire to bind the stems (or sturdy tape) and place branches in a nice large vase or pot of your choosing, a simple solution is to use a ceramic planter for the base and spray paint it your desired color, generally something neutral black, white, or left the original color.
2. Fill with sand, decorative rocks, or plaster of paris/portland cement. For the wish tree, because of its size and breadth and interaction with the guests plaster of paris or cement is recommended. Position your branches in the base in the desired arrangement and pour the plaster of paris or cement to an inch below the top of the vase or pot leaving room for a cover material(if desired).
3. Dry easter grass, or a floral or potpourri layer on top of your fill in the base is a nice touch. If using glass vases and fill rocks, a small battery powered led light can be placed in your vases for an amazing luminous effect.
Tip 1: for wish trees, when grouping the branches, try to do so in a way that uses the filler branches to create as much space for hanging wishes as possible.
Tip 2: Size of the base and branch height is entirely to your preference, you want the base to be as wide as possible and heavy as possible without overdoing it. For Example, “An 8 to 12″ wide, 6″ tall vase or pot is stable enough for a 42″ wishing tree set in cement.”
