Many people who are in to aquaponics are mainly focused on the idea of growing fish to feed their plants in a neat cycle of life. A new trend is emerging that takes aquaponics to a new level. The two main parts to the system the fish and the plants make a great outdoor garden. So why not add some outdoor lighting and make the whole system an architectural feature of your home?
In the beginning there was hydroponics. In general hydroponics there are no fish. All you needed was some rockwool and some advanced nutrients and you were in business. Hydroponic nutrients were dissolved in water and delivered to the roots of the plants via some type of soaking or spraying.
Along came aquaponics and fish are now being used to replace expensive advanced nutrients. In aquaponics the fish supply the hyrdoponic nutrients every time they excrete their poo into the water. Then the plants are fed the water the roots filter out the nutrients and the water is cycled back to the fish filter and ready for reuse.
The process above traditionally has been carried out with little regard for the aesthetics of the system. Imagine plastic fish tanks and pvc pipes everywhere. The new trend is to achieve the same goal and make it look good too. Imagine beautiful fish ponds, concealed pipes, and elegant outdoor lighting.
I’m not referring to grow lights although grow lights could be incorporated into the system. If your not familiar with grow lights these are lights that emit a certain frequency of light, the part of the spectrum that plants use for photosynthesis. Led grow lights are becoming very popular these are the same lights used to illuminate an led tv or led display, but that is a subject for another article.
The type of outdoor lighting I’m referring to is garden lighting. Such as high or low voltage lighting or solar garden lights. Solar lights are another popular trend in outdoor lighting. Outdoor solar lights need little o no maintenance and last for years. The draw back to solar lights is that they mainly use led light bulbs. Some people complain that they just are not as bright as say Philips lighting or halogen light bulbs.
With the right outdoor lighting you can turn a ugly aquaponic setup into a beautiful garden feature. If you illuminate your fish pond, add a lighted waterfall, and spot light a few plants you will be amazed at the transformation. All it takes is a little imagination.
