The 80/20 Rule Of Search Engine Marketing

There was a time when seo was all about optimizing your page in terms of keywords and tags and linking. Today, seo has become more advanced and is a field apart. It combines the best of marketing, technology and writing. seo has evolved rapidly partly because of the search engines such as Google rapidly evolving and introducing new technologies – such as the Google PageRank technology which is more or less one of the gravest concerns of a seo professional.

This particular will discuss a special 80/20 rule in seo – that applies mainly to Google but is also applicable to other search engines. This particular covers two types of seo – On Page Optimisation and Off Page – the former being the earlier form of seo and the latter the more modern form of seo that has evolved rapidly and is responsible for how search engines like Google rank a page in their index.

The 80/20 rule is a ratio applied to these two types of seo – the 80% applies to the off page optimization whereas the lower, 20% applies to on page optimization. This means that, off all seo done, weightage is placed according to this ratio – Google will for example measure the ‘SEOness’ of your page such that off page optimization will have a 80% weightage on the ranking whereas on page optimization will have a 20% weightage on the Google ranking.

On page optimization refers to seo done on a webpage – in terms of the HTML tags, keywords, file structure, titles and so forth. On page optimization is thus more or less done by the webpage creator. He/she determines how ‘seo‘d’ the page is and such optimization is not affected by outside links or websites. This is what accounts for 20% of Google’s ranking of the page.

Off page optimization on the other hand involves such factors as – links to your website and its webpages, the actual linking text (anchor text) of these links and the quality of the pages which the links are on amongst a number of factors. In fact, these factors weigh more heavily – 80% – on Google’s ranking of the page (such as the Google PageRank). Such seo is what counts more on a page – particularly in terms of a competitive keyword. A good example of such a keyword is ‘Making Money on the Internet’ – if a webpage has excellent off page seo, it will rank higher on Google’s index for this term.

The aforementioned seo is more or less controlled by other websites and webmasters and this is why it weighs heavily on how your page is ranked – this is because a person can make a large number of ‘illegal’ changes to the webpage in terms of on page seo but cant manipulate off page seo (to some extent).

Thus, the conclusion is that off page seo weighs more heavily and is more important than on page seo for a website – and webmasters and seo practitioners should focus on this aspect of seo.
