Cable Glands are circular mechanical cable entry devices that seal electrical cable entering an enclosure, motor, pump or generator. Cable Glands are the universal replacement for more expensive conduit and are used internationally.
Cable Glands come in a variety of materials that offer different benefits depending on the cable and the electrical equipment used. Some of the most common materials used are: brass, stainless steel, cooper, nickel plated, glass reinforced polyester and often times a combination of two.
Choosing the right Cable Gland depends on the type of cable used and the diameter of that cable. Common questions when selecting a Cable Gland are: What material cable gland is required for this project? Is there a Hazardous Area rating? Do the Cable Glands need to be certified in CSA, ATEX, or both? What type of thread is needed on the male end of the gland?
The type of seal on the Cable Gland is also evaluated when selecting the right gland. There are five different types of sealing method used that directly affect the cable inner bedding seal. These are: Compression Seal, Displacement Seal, Diaphragm Seal, Compensating Displacement Seal (CDS) System and Compound Barrier Seal. The difference between these is the application of the seal ring on the cable.
Some of the strong benefits of Cable Glands are:
o Environmental protection from dust and moisture from the enclosure
o Provide a holding force to limit pull out resistance
o In Hazardous areas- maintain a level of protection on the attached equipment
o Firestop, explosion proof, EMI or RFI shielding, and pre-terminated cable accommodation
