Medical technology allows surgeons to perform miracles by being able to perform intricate procedures without ever having to actually open the patient up, reducing the risk of infection through exposure to the air. By using devices created and patented by the steel industry, especially a handy aid known as a guide wire assembly, they can manipulate life saving devices throughout the vascular system with pinpoint accuracy, with a lot less stress on the human body. Also used in the robotics industry, these little constructs might look fragile, but they can do nearly anything a human mind can put it to.
What Exactly Is a Guide Wire?
In layman terms, this is essentially a long and straight spring, generally composed of 316 stainless steel. It has diameters ranging from.25mm to any length needed, and will have one end made up of an elastic material, so as to create a usable and flexible tip. They have been used for years in medicine to position medical devices like cameras underneath the skin, to insert catheters, or to place stents in hearts.
Several years ago, experiments were done to create a network of these wires to facilitate microscopic surgical procedures, where the end goal was to successfully use lasers, cameras and other devices internally, without making more than a single incision into the body. These networks of coiled wires are collectively known as a guide wire assembly, and have saved countless lives by helping doctors perform life saving operations without risking the chance of infection in their high-risk patients.
Constructing the Wire Assembly
Most assemblies will consist of hypodermic tubing and coiled wires. There is an outer sheath of 316 stainless steel coiled wires known as interventional guide wire assemblies, surrounding a single length of coiled wire known as an access wire. The two assemblies can be made in any number of lengths and diameters, with specs using inches for the diameters, and centimeters for lengths. This is done specifically so that the diameter of the wire can effectively correspond to the medical device being used with it, like catheters, eliminating any possibility of error in measurements.
The typical length for an access guide wire is usually between 45 to 70 cm, and interventional wires will be upwards of 150 to 260 cm, sometimes as much as 500 cm, depending upon the application’s requirements. Both assemblies can be manufacturing as straight, curved or hooked, again, depending upon the application needed. By definition, the typical assembly will consist of a network of interventional wires, coated with PTFE for lubrication purposes, surrounding an access wire, to which ribbon wires are welded for the purpose of manipulating it once it has reached its intended destination. The core access wire carries the device and the interventional wires get it there.
